The Allure of Boundaries

The sense of boundaries between people is actually quite vague/ambiguous. Between outsiders and those directly involved, there exists the role of an external intruder who probes the edges, challenging the transgression of such boundaries. Often, we find it difficult to realize when we have intruded into each other’s space.

I designed a square space filled with obstacles and boundaries, and manually cut and assembled a small sample using 0.5mm transparent acrylic sheets. During the production process, I conducted repeated tests to evaluate its playability. The design of multiple routes was informed by simulating the movement of a small ball. After finalizing the design, I measured the dimensions of each part, scaled the model by a factor of three, and used thicker 2mm acrylic for the entire internal structure. To ensure sufficient stability when suspended, I selected 3.6mm thick material for the six exterior sides.

This box symbolizes the domain of existence surrounding the primary ball. Within this domain, numerous obstacles and impediments emerge, reminiscent of the bottlenecks, setbacks, challenges, and unexpected occurrences encountered throughout its existence. The smaller balls that periodically enter act as transient visitors in the life of the main ball; some linger briefly, while others may remain permanently. Their interactions with the main ball and among themselves exhibit varying degrees of influence and are filled with uncertainty, mirroring the complexities of human life.

Multiple participants can freely select a small ball from the table and place it into the box through an opening. They are able to rotate the transparent box at will, allowing the ball to roll inside. Participants can observe how the different small balls interact with the internal space of the box and with the main ball.

This also represents reflects the interpersonal relationships in a person's life at any given moment. Numerous individuals impact this person in different ways, affecting their trajectory. For instance, the participant may remove the smaller balls by manipulating them, which results in the main ball being deprived of certain associated individuals. Simultaneously, the participant may also insert other objects through the holes, thereby altering the dynamics within the box.
